Market Commentary for the Month of March 2012
The Dow wrapped up the first quarter of 2012 posting its largest ever point gain for any first quarter in its history. On a percentage basis, the United States markets experienced its best first quarter since 1998. The world markets were up about 11% for the quarter, with the S&P up 12% and the Dow up around 8%. Financials led the way posting a 21% gain for the quarter, recovering some of what it lost during last summer’s dive. A widespread belief amongst economists is that the markets outperformed the economy as a whole, and much of the gains were recoveries from previous losses as opposed to fundamentally based increases. Market Commentary for the Month of February 2012
The month of February continued the steady gains of January for the Dow, which has climbed nearly 600 points so far this year. The Dow hit the 13,000 mark for the first time since early 2008, before the world markets collapsed. Although such a major index has climbed back to where it was before the crash, the perception of investors and the realities of the job market and debt situation give reason for concern about the meaning of the Dow hitting that mark. Market Commentary for the Month of May 2012
For the seventh consecutive month, the Dow had a gain. In the month of April, the index increased slightly over 1 point, but nonetheless higher than it started. The S&P 500 dropped during April, its first losing month since November. Tuesday marked the highest close for the Dow since late 2007.
Much of the momentum that the economy picked up in the historic first quarter has slowed, and the summer months are rapidly approaching with much anticipation as many variables are in play for the remainder of the year. Some issues at hand include common election year trends and whether or not they will hold true, annual oil trends and their effects on the commodities markets, as well as a more fundamental approach regarding national debt amongst key economic powers. Recent news that Spain is back in a recession has caused some concern overseas. Read more
